A short survey on nonlinear models of the classic Costas loop: rigorous derivation and limitations of the classic analysis
2015
Rigorous nonlinear analysis of the physical model of Costas loop --- a classic phase-locked loop (PLL) based circuit for carrier recovery, is a challenging task. Thus for its analysis, simplified mathematical models and numerical simulation are widely used. In this work a short survey on nonlinear models of the BPSK Costas loop, used for pre-design and post-design analysis, is presented. Their rigorous derivation and limitations of classic analysis are discussed. It is shown that the use of simplified mathematical models, and the application of non rigorous methods of analysis (e.g., simulation and linearization) may lead to wrong conclusions concerning the performance of the Costas loop ph…

Cycles in continuous and discrete dynamical systems : computations, computer-assisted proofs, and computer experiments
2009
The present work is devoted to calculation of periodic solutions and bifurcation research in quadratic systems, Lienard system, and non-unimodal one-dimensional discrete maps using modern computational capabilities and symbolic computing packages. In the first chapter the problem of Academician A.N. Kolmogorov on localization and modeling of cycles of quadratic systems is considered. For the investigation of small limit cycles (so-called local 16th Hilbert’s problem) the method of calculation of Lyapunov quantities (or Poincaré-Lyapunov constants) is used. To calculate symbolic expressions for the Lyapunov quantities the Lyapunov method to the case of non-analytical systems was generalized. …
A Human-Humanoid Interaction Through the Use of BCI for Locked-In ALS Patients Using Neuro-Biological Feedback Fusion.
2018
This paper illustrates a new architecture for a human–humanoid interaction based on EEG-brain computer interface (EEG-BCI) for patients affected by locked-in syndrome caused by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The proposed architecture is able to recognise users’ mental state accordingly to the biofeedback factor $\text {B}_{\text f}$ , based on users’ attention, intention, and focus, that is used to elicit a robot to perform customised behaviours. Experiments have been conducted with a population of eight subjects: four ALS patients in a near locked-in status with normal ocular movement and four healthy control subjects enrolled for age, education, and computer expertise. The results s…
An automated procedure for computing the packing properties of dense and locked sands by image analysis of thin sections
2014
The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of dense sands originates to a great extent from their microstructural characteristics such as the coordination number, the grain contact and the packing density indexes. The study of intergranular contacts and the reckoning of these indexes may be carried out on planar images of the grains either by means of time-consuming visual inspection assisted by CAD or by automatic image analysis. An innovative method for the automatic determination of microstructural characteristics of sands based on image analysis of thin section is proposed. Tests performed on a locked sand show that the proposed method is much more effective, convenient and faster than the us…
Long-cavity all-fiber ring laser actively mode locked with an in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator.
2013
We demonstrate low-frequency active mode locking of an erbium-doped all-fiber ring laser. As the mode locker, we used a new in-fiber bandpass acousto-optic modulator showing 74% modulation depth, 3.7 dB power insertion losses, 4.5 nm of optical bandwidth, and 20 dB of nonresonant light suppression. The laser generates 330 ps mode-locked pulses over a 10 ns pedestal, at a 1.538 MHz frequency, with 130 mW of pump power. Fil: Cuadrado Laborde, Christian Ariel. Universidad de Valencia; España. Characterization of a pulsed injection-locked Ti:sapphire laser and its application to high resolution resonance ionization spectroscopy of copper
2017
A high repetition rate pulsed Ti:sapphire laser injection-locked to a continuous wave seed source is presented. A spectral linewidth of 20 MHz at an average output power of 4W is demonstrated. An enhanced tuning range from 710-920 nm with a single broadband mirror set is realized by the inclusion of a single thin birefringent quartz plate for suppression of unseeded emission. The spectral properties have been analyzed using both a scanning Fabry-P´erot interferometer as well as crossed beam resonance ionization spectroscopy of the hyperfine levels of natural copper. Delayed ionization of the long-lived excited state is demonstrated for increased resolution. For the excited state hyperfine c…

Bifurcations and multiple-period soliton pulsations in a passively mode-locked fiber laser
2004
The multiple-period pulsations of the soliton parameters in a passively mode-locked fiber laser were discussed numerically and experimentally. It was found that the pulse acquired a periodic evolution that was not related to the round-trip time and consisted of many round trips. The macroperiodicity existed independently or in combination with other periodicity such as period doubling, tripling etc. Analysis shows that the new periods in the soliton modulation appear at bifurcation point related to certain points related to certain values of the cavity parameters.
